Re: Flat Batteries - Active Circuit
The battery lifetime in my S2 is veeerrrryyyy long. After playing you just have to disconnect the cable from your bass and every thing is fine and your battery will live for long. If you would like to know what happens when your battery is flat.........just disconnect it.

Do you get no sound at all? Or is it just a weak signal from the pups? How much 'notice' do you get that they are going to fail?

I'd hate to be scrabbling around for two 9vs mid gig!

Thanks for the help.

I cannot say I have ever had batteries go flat on my KB. The battery life stated on a good make of battery is a really high number of hours, so unless you have left them with the jack plugged in for ages then I don't think you are going to have a mid gig problem. I have found with my DR strings, I can get about 10 gigs out of them, so I change my batteries when I change my strings, that way no potential flat batteries. I could probably go a lot longer between changing them, but for me I know how old my batteries are and approximately how many hours they have been active for. You can get a pack of 10 Duracell Industrials from Amazon for around £7 to £10 (the same make Status fit in their new basses), so not a lot to shell out.

If they did go, I would imagine it would be similar to an old fuzz pedal, you would start to get signal break up slowly getting weaker and then eventually nothing. Have to admit I have never tried plugging in the bass with no batteries fitted. Might give it a go now its been mentioned Smile

Hi Roger, I have used Newtone in the past, I too had some roundwounds from them when I was playing about with string options on the KB. Friendly bunch and beautifully made strings, but I just couldn't get the tone I was looking for. I have to admit I hadn't thought about them as a potential flatwound supplier. I will take a look at their website and see what they have to offer. Many thanks

I feel the same as BassBus on the Status full flats they were a bit stiff & not a patch on La Bella DT, but the Half Wound Status were great!!! Got a set of Status Half DBs on My Kingbass at the moment, But they don't make them any more :-(

Thanks for the heads up SG about clamping the strings. I have found as well that Flat wound DBE strings are difficult to obtain and dramatically reduces the selection. For the time being I have stuck with my round wounds on the KB, but I may try the TIs out on my JD as it sees less active use at the moment. Either that or I persuade the missus that I really need another bass........ Smile

Thanks Bassbus, this is definitely food for thought, your S3 sounds meaty. I may give the TIs a go, they make them in a similar gauge to what I already use.

The reason for all this is that I bought a Hofner Ignition Violin Bass a little while ago for messing around on and recently fitted LaBella Flatwounds to it, and could not get over how good it sounded and played. So was interested in what they might do for my Kingbass (though the Kingbass is in regular gigging use, so didn't want to buy a pricey set of strings and mess about with it with gigs looming)

I have used the Status flats in the past and to be frank they were like stair rods. Not my cup of tea but some people would like them I'm sure.

I use LaBella 760FS flats on an Overwater fretless and they are fantastic. I have TI Jazz Flats on my S2 fretless at the moment which sound and feel sublime.

Re: Flatwounds
Hi One and all. Two questions:

1) Has anyone tried flatwounds on a Kingbass? Just wondered what it would sound like. I am not a great slapper (don't listen to the rumours Smile ), I don't have a lot of call for it in my current band, but I wondered what it would sound like? Anyone's experiences would be appreciated.

2) What are the Status flatwounds like? Does anyone on here use them? How do they compare with for example, Rotosounds, or LaBellas for example? I know they all have their different tones etc. Again any experiences would be appreciated.

If it's of any use, my S2000 developed a problem with fitting DBE strings. They seemed too short and I ran out of tuning length. Mr. Green managed to sort the problem though. As Garbo has said, some pics would be useful.

Up to a few months ago, I have been using Elite DBEs on my KingBass and my S4000 with no problems at all (in fact my S4000 still has a set fitted). I have also tried GHS DBEs, Newtone DBEs, Rotosound DBEs and obviously Hotwires, again with no fitting issues at all. The tuning systems on my KB and my S4000 are both different as well of course, the S4000 having the old design winders. I think there is something else that is causing your issue.

Maybe you need to post a few pictures of your bass showing the suspect strings in place at the tuning end and the neck string retainers so some of our cleverer members might be able to diagnose what the issue is. You never know, it might be something really simple.

Re: False Alarm - sorted (Buzzing S2 Preamp/pickups - Shielding issue?)
Well, there's some weird business going on at my gaff. Tried the same tests today and the bass was fine, some slight treble hiss but nothing too intrusive.

I think some of my older amps and this particular bass seem to be susceptible to interference from the electrics in the property, but obviously not at all times.

Hey ho at least it's not a lemon, it sounds lovely Grin

Re: False Alarm - sorted (Buzzing S2 Preamp/pickups - Shielding issue?)
I’ve changed the batteries. Don’t have the means (or the knowhow) to test anything else unfortunately. I’ll take it in to get it looked at but was just wondering if any other owners had experienced or ideally overcome this particular problem with this bass and/or preamp.

I guess you've tried changing the batteries?
Do you have a meter to check everything is grounded properly?

had a uni-pre in my matrix energy - great if you want it for studio work but a beast on steroids if you want it for gigging - the east circuits are very good and extremly well made but for controlability gigging i am going back to the original BP1 status board after refurbing the pots
