Re: Hi from Australia
Hey everyone, Status newbie here! Smile

I recently picked up a Shark 5 String. Great little Bass; I was after a passive 5 String for recording (all my 5 Strings are active) & it came up for a good price, so I grabbed it. It was originally going to be purely for recording; however after doing a bit of a setup on it it's fast becoming one of my favourite Basses, so I'm going to look at gigging it a bit (once we actually get back to gigging that is....). Grin Has a few chips & nicks, & the pickguard looks like it's not only warped but shrunk as well, but it sounds & plays really nice.

Just out of curiosity does anyone know how to decode the four digit serial numbers? From what I've read I'm pretty sure mine's a mid-90's model (tort pickguard with the single chrome pickup in the P bass position), but it'd be nice to know for sure.

Cheers all. Smile

Re: Greetings
Hello from Italy!

I'm a 36 yo amateur bassist. I currently own an G&L L2500 Tribute and I play mainly fingerstyle.
I'm searching information about Status basses, in particular the Streamline model, so I thought this forum would be the right place to read about it and ask questions!

Re: Long time owner, sad times
Thanks for your feedback everyone. I think if that's the case then I'll probably hold on to it until I get lucky!

Re: Long time owner, sad times
I bought a custom finish 80’s S2 this year that’s in immaculate condition and with a genuine ‘one of a kind’ paint job.

It cost me under £1,500 and it had been up for sale for quite a while (at higher prices) but simply wasn’t selling

There it is ‘clickable’

Very sad you have to sell your beautiful bass.

More sad news is that, although in my (and many others here) opinion these basses are superb in every way and should carry a high second hand ticket price, they just don’t fetch that much money. I have 2 5 strings... one series II and one Empathy. I paid £1,200 & £950 for them. They are both in immaculate condition. I think you will be very hard pushed to find that €3,000 price tag.

Having said that, these basses are less and less frequently seen on the market. So you might get lucky!

I wish you all the best with your sale and hopefully someone comes along who is looking for exactly that and is willing to pay What the bass is worth!

Re: Long time owner, sad times
Welcome from me too.

Mint condition, original hardcase and paperwork, no shipping/pickup and test possible, the right buyer, generous wife in christmas mood, snow slowly falling outside the windows....

The longer away you move from the above conditions the lower the price.
I'm far from an expert, but this is based on my own sale of a similar bass this august with a mid 70 serial number.

I would estimate that it could fetch you up arround 2800-3000 euro. Perhaps you'll have to wait for the right buyer. Like with a lot of fine art, demand varies.

Welcome, despite the sad reason for your membership.

As for your picture, I can't get it to load either. I thought removing everything behind "jpeg" in the URL might work, but it didn't! It loads fine if I just copy the link to the address bar though. Beautiful bass indeed!

I am the proud owner of a Series II 5-string headless, circa 1986/7, serial number 008, red flamed maple with carbon graphite through neck. I have owned this bass for over three decades and through good times and not so good times, was never tempted to sell it. Until now. Over the years, the bass seems only to have become more beautiful. It lasted longer than my first marriage, it's older than my grown up children and it is simply the most beautiful thing I have ever owned.

On the Status site, Rob writes that selling the original S2 is the biggest regret of a bass player, or so he hears and I can believe it. I noticed that the remakes (only 14!) were going for close to £6K. When I last met Rob about 15 years ago or so, he mentioned that my model was in serious demand.

That said, I am now facing persistent hand issues and can no longer fret any instrument. These issues, due to Type 1 diabetes are unlikely to go away. In my experience, when something goes unused, it finds a way out of your life on your terms, or its own terms.

So I'm now thinking about selling it, so that someone who loves these incomparably beautiful instruments can benefit from a model that is probably among the greatest instruments ever made. I've no idea what I can expect to get for it, but I'd love to get some kind of indication of how much I could expect for my beloved 008.

(With apologies for not being able to work out how to get the image link at the top to work!)

My name's Shahid by the way, and I'm a long time video game developer who had a few interludes into music.

Hello everyone.
I'm from France, I'm 38 years old.
I'm crazy about my Status Energy 4 I have owned for 18 years ... to keep him company I recently found 1 Shark Passive, 1 Shark Pro Active and 1 Groovebass 5.
I would love to find one with a carbon and headless handle ...

Re: Hello from US/Japan/Belgium
Garbo-san,

Thank you!
OK, as I finalize my thoughts, I'll contact Rob-san and see what he thinks.
My main concern is the space b/w string and body b/w the edge/end of the fingerboard and the neck pickup. If it is the same as the older Series 2, then no issue, but from the picture, it looks there's more space.

Anyways, I'll ring him a call and figure out !!

BTW, I just came back from my first Level 42 show in Europe in Holland. It was a short 1h show but man! that was awesome! His T-bass sounded super nice as well.

Hi Takeo, I am sure like many others, I have been to the factory when I went to collect my Kingbass, they are lovely people, even got a cup of tea Smile . I was obviously there to collect my order, however they did have a number of other basses, some I am sure were customers, but some I recognised as the stock basses advertised at the time on the website. I would imagine if you are serious about ordering, they would let you visit (as it is appointment only) but I am sure would not be able to guarantee that a particular model would be available for you to try. However, if this is the case maybe you could try a number of basses that have the elements you are looking at?

The bass amps (A Trace Elliot rig and a TC rig as they were when I visited) are in Robs lab, as are the basses being finished, so given he is a critical part of a small business they might hurry you along, but it is understandable. You can always call them and find out.

Good luck to you

Re: Hello from US/Japan/Belgium
Thanks moo!!!
Yes, i think it is not cocobolo like you said, i used to own an Alembic with cocobolo and even the most straight grained cocobolo is not that straight.
I have to say, when I first played this bass, it just felt the same as the '93 I had. Over the years, I've owned a lot of basses and I'm pretty confident that Status headless graphite neck is the one for me.

Now, i am really wanting to try out the S2 Classic headless graphite thru neck version with the Bendwell. I'm big fan of medium scale basses and this is really tempting.

Do you know if Status factory has basses on display to try on? Since I live in Belgium right now, I might take this opportunity to make the pilgrimage to the birth place.

Andre-san: thanks for your warm welcome!! moo-san has been very nice, it's sad that forum isn't all that active, but given the scale of fan base, i guess it’s understandable.

You have #230!?!?! That's awesome! What type of top do you have on yours? Mine is mystery to me... looks like a rosewood or some sort of dark wood, I've seen these 'yellow streaks' on the cocobolo before, but i doubt mine is that....maybe??

Yup, that’s nice!

Those yellow bits are sap wood. Straight grain tends to be rosewood rather than cocobolo. Lovely bass either way.

My #230 is probably my very fav old Status to play. So easy!

Well done, enjoy!
