Have spent a good hour playing it, it is very impressive.

I was very surprised with the versatility of the S2, the neck pickup was very useable as a non-bright and warm tone. Both pickups is wonderfully rounded but not sure if the bridge pickup is a little too nasal (not used to a pickup so close to bridge)

The issue I have though - is that if I'm going to keep it I have to trade in my Overwater Progress III for it. They sound very different and both have strengths and weaknesses.. i'll decide over the weekend :).

Just a question: Is that a s2 classic or an empathy?

It was advertised as an S2 Classic and it matches the website spec for it.

If it has mahogany on the back it's an S2, if it has a fancy facing wood front and back it's probably an Empathy. ;)

It looks tlike an empathy, no truss rod, graphite through the bridge. Does it have a fancy top on the back Mr. Machines?

There is no fancy wood on the back, it has mahogany sides and the neckthrough section that the carbon sits in looks like maple but the same wood on the top has been sprayed to look darker, almost like walnut.

What are the official differences between the Empathy and S2 ? This is a 1996 model (supposedly !). Can't remember exact serial number but I think it was 2500ish (visible between strap buttons on bottom).

The bit in the middle that looks like walnut is walnut, Rob calls it the "tone block" and some say it gives a sweeter tone than setting the neck into the mahogany.

I think the main difference was the facings on the back, I'm not sure if the Empathy ever got the 300 series active circuit with the mid cut/boost switch. The specifications changed over time but I think they were the main difference. And the price!

It's all walnut ?! Oh ! It looks yellow on the back like maple. Also my Overwater has a walnut body wood and it's much darker the apparent walnut block in the S2. didn't realise there was a lot of variation in it..

Look at this, it's from "brochure 16" on the catalogs & more page, it´s listed as an empathy:

I believe your bass is an empathy, but despite the model name, it's a really nice bass, if i wasn't waiting for mine to be made, i would i've bought it from bassdirect., great price.

EDIT:

I just saw the Series 2 headed option, it is probably one.
