i just bought one of these. It looks like I have to unscrew the tuners/string retainers completely from the body in order to change the strings.
Is that correct? Or am I being a bit thick?

Just loosen the tuners until the bits holding the strings come out far enough. Then the strings will just slot out. You put the new ones in the same way and reverse the process. Simples.

If you unscrew the top of the tuner mechanism the whole thing will just explode.:o
There are many ways to overcomplicate things, but that should be over when you buy a status.
I've had my bass tugged away for like 5 years and when I pulled it out of the case it still was in tune.
