I have used Seymour Duncan and Aguilar pre-amp as upgrades to passive Status basses. You also have the option of the East U-Retro. Of the three I would recommend the Aguilar and U-Retro. Might be worth taking the opportunity to give it a bit of a refinish while it is partially stripped down.
